What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid Surgery As we get old we begin to lose the elasticity in our skin. As a result, skin starts to droop or sag. If you are noticing excess skin on your eyelids and you are looking to refresh your old, tired-looking eyes, it might be time to talk to us about eyelid surgery.

Even though this procedure is typically cosmetic, it can be a great way to improve eyesight that may be affected by severe eyelid sagging. However, it’s important to note that this cosmetic procedure is not designed to treat crow’s feet, wrinkles or undereye circles.

Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery will be in good health and have practical expectations and goals for their cosmetic treatment. Before you even get treated, we will consult with you about your health, lifestyle, medical history and treatment goals to make sure that eyelid surgery is the best option for you. Eyelid surgery is a great way to improve your appearance and boost your self-esteem.

Of course because skin will continue to change as we age, the results won’t be able to last forever. If you get upper eyelid surgery, your result could last up to seven years. And you’ll be happy to hear that lower eyelid surgery is rarely needed more than once.

Eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours if you are getting both the upper and lower eyelids treated. This procedure is also most often performed under local anesthesia and some form of sedation. Small incisions are made to remove excess fat and muscle. These areas will then be stitched back together. Stitches on the upper eyelids will usually remain for up to six days while lower eyelids may not even require stitches.

When it comes to treating the lower eyelids this can be done usually different techniques. One way is to make a small incision in the lower eyelid to remove fat and then use a special laser to reduce the appearance of fine lines. Another option allows us to cut along the eyelash line to remove skin and fat without a visible scar.
